Asif Ali was included in the Pakistan squad for the T20I series against the West Indies in March 2016. He made his debut against the West Indies in the 1st T20I of the series on April 1, 2016 in Karachi. Then in July, 2016 he went to Zimbabwe. Asif Ali made his debut in the 1st ODI of the series against hosts Zimbabwe on July 13, 2016 in Bulawayo.
In August 2016, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) signed 33 players at the central level for the 2018-19 season. He was also included as one of the players. Asif Ali has been named in the 15-member squad for the Cricket World Cup by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

In the 2016-17 season, he participated in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy for Faisalabad. He took part in six games and scored 369 runs and became the top run-getter. He took part in four matches and scored 326 runs to become the top run-getter in Punjab.
