International career –

Year of inauguration : –

During the 2006 Zimbabwe tour, Shakib had the first opportunity to play for the Bangladesh national team. Shakib and Reza were considered “the most promising young talents in the country” at the time, with exceptional skills in all departments. In this context, the statement made by then-head coach Farooq Ahmed is particularly memorable: “We have high expectations of the youth. Now is the time to give them the opportunity to play on an international level.” Shakib made his ODI debut on August 8th.

His first victim is Elton Chigumbura. 39-1 was his bowling figure of the day. He was unbeaten on 30 balls out of 30 with the racket. On that day, Shahriar Nafees marked the first century of his career helping Bangladesh to victory. The game was the last game in the series in which Zimbabwe won 3-2. As a result, the number of players hired by the board increased from 20 to 23.

From February to March 2008, he traveled to South Africa, Bangladesh, to conduct two tests and three ODIs. The visiting team won both events. Shakib took just one wicket with 122 points and immediately scored 75 points. South Africa also won the ODI series 3-0. In this series, Shakib passed the milestone of 1000 races at ODI. After playing 39 games, Shakib’s batting average was 35.36. Despite being a versatile player, Shakib was considered a hitter, not a bowler, until the October 2006 Bangladesh tour of New Zealand. Shakib did not disappoint the trainer. He took 6 wickets for 36 points in the first innings of the opening Test.

At the beginning of 2009, Ashraful’s position as captain was challenged due to multiple losses and a long career in Bangladesh. Since then, the BCB began to see Shakib as the “potential captain” of the national team. However, the BCB was not ready to put the burden of the harbor master’s office on Shakib’s shoulders so quickly. Later, after losing to Bangladesh, Ireland, and India in the first round of the 2009 T20 World Cup, the question of Ashraful’s captaincy was raised again. In June 2009 Mashrafe was named captain and Shakib was named co-captain.
