Salma Sultan was born as the second daughter of Mohammad Asghar Ansari, a scholar and secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and a housewife. Salma’s older sister was Maimuna Sultan. Salma and Maymuna were the great-granddaughters of Shah Shuja of Afghanistan. Salma did her schooling and graduated from Bhopal. She completed her master’s degree in English from Indraprastha College for Women in Delhi and at the same time applied for a job as an announcer on Doordarshan at the age of 23.
