Roshan was originally scheduled to debut on screen with Shekhar Kapoor’s discarded star Ram Pam Pam opposite Preity Zinta. Instead, he made his debut opposite another debutant Amisha Patel in his father Rakesh Roshan’s romantic drama Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai 2000. Roshan plays a dual character, where Rohit is a budding singer who is brutally murdered for being an eyewitness to a murder and Raj falls in love with Patel, an expatriate Indian. In preparation for the film, she took physical training with actor Salman Khan, worked to improve her word choice, took lessons in acting, singing, dancing, and horse racing. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai is the highest-grossing Indian film of 2000, grossing Rs. 620 million worldwide. Critics praised Roshan’s performance; Sujnu Kanchana of Rediff.com writes, Roshan is good. Her dancing, gestures, her instinctive demeanor and style in the fight will not let anyone understand that this is her debut film she is the most promising among the children of the stars in recent times. For this work, Roshan won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Newcomer, IIFA Award, and G Cine Award.
